Join us for a fun day of outdoor activities as we hike to a National Historic Site. Our moderately paced loop hike will be about 8 miles in length with some hilly terrain.

History is everywhere at Hopewell Furnace. It’s one of the “iron plantations” that began America’s transformation into an industrial giant.

French Creek’s history overlaps with that of its neighbor, Hopewell Iron Furnace. While the furnace was in operation from 1771 to 1883, the area surrounding the operation, including the present day French Creek SP, produced charcoal. Hopewell Furnace thrived in the 1800s and required massive amounts of charcoal to fuel the large blast furnace. On the surrounding rolling hills, woodcutters downed much of the forest as colliers used the lumber to create charcoal in hearths.

During our visit we can watch a blacksmith carefully hammer glowing metal while listening to the forging of iron echo across the landscape.

After meeting at the French Creek SP Lake Parking Lot, let's hike the Boone Trail along the lake then connect to the Horseshoe and Lenape Trails towards Hopewell Furnace. Once there, we'll beak for lunch, stop at the visitor center, and tour the various buildings and village at this historic outdoor museum. We will return using various trails on the opposite side of the lake to complete this interesting and historic loop hiking adventure.
