Colt Creek 8 Mile Loop Hike
Park entrance fee: $4. Ask for the hiking map.
We will be parking between trail markers 1 and 2 on the map. You will turn right from the ranger station on the dirt road. Look to your right when sitting at the ranger station. The road is not ahead of you it’s on your right. Please ask Ranger if you’re not sure. Tell the ranger you want to park at the “Flatwoods Trail” parking area. There are bathrooms, parking, and water at the trailhead. There is no water on the trail.
Colt Creek State Park is located in Central Florida. This 5,067-acre park nestled within the Green Swamp Wilderness Area and named after one of the tributaries that flows through the property. Composed mainly of pine flatwoods, cypress domes, and open pastureland and home to many animal species, including the American bald eagle, Southern fox squirrel, gopher tortoise, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and bobcat.
The trail is wide and is great for socializing while hiking. Most of the trail you can walk side-by-side instead of in line formation. Great for walking and socializing or great for falling behind the group but not losing sight of your fellow hikers. We will stop at all turns/changes in the trail. The trail is marked, but you must watch for directional changes.
This is an 8-mile loop trail and NO drop-out options. You will need to be able to walk the entire 8 miles. We will walk somewhere between 20–23-minute miles. This is a group hike! We will be taking water breaks along the way and a break for food somewhere around the halfway point.
Be prepared: There is no water on the trail, so bring enough water to get you through ish miles of hiking. We could be hiking for five hours – it’s suggested you bring 2 liters (2 quarts) of water. If you do not have sufficient water with you, you will not be able to participate. There is no access to water on the trail. There is little shade in this park, lots of open pastures, open canopy, and you will be exposed to the sun. Please bring adequate sun protection, whether that be a hat, umbrella, or sunscreen, whatever you need to protect yourself from the sun. You’re encouraged to bring whatever makes your hike comfortable for you. Please think about what you need before you leave home.
Make sure to:
wear proper hiking footwear and clothing
adequate quantity of water. 2 quarts or 2 liters highly recommended
bug spray/sunscreen
food/snacks
