Explore a spectacular and scenic landscape on the Atlantic coast featuring wild areas and remnants of its military history. Named for the 25th NY governor (a confirmed bachelor), Fort Tilden on the Rockaway Peninsula reflects its WW1, New Deal/WPA, WW2, and Cold War history. Now part of the Gateway National Recreation Area, its now-peaceful dunes, maritime forest, and freshwater ponds are accessed via mostly level paths and old roadways. On this easy walk led by Rockaway resident and co-leader Phillip, we plan to also see the former Nike missile launch site, Rockaway Playhouse, Rockaway Artists' Alliance gallery, and Secret Beach as we explore the wild and vast site.

Among the various surviving old defense structures is Battery Harris East, with panoramic 360-degree vistas of the city, [New York Harbor](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_Harbor "New York Harbor"), and the Atlantic Ocean from its elevated viewing platform. We will provide binoculars so you can hopefully see hawks, ospreys, and other raptors as well as whales and dolphins.

Following the walk, group lunch at restaurant ----- ) (vegetarian options) New members and friends are especially welcome on this easy and social exploration of a spectacular NYC destination!

**MEET**: Registered participants meet at

**TRAVEL**: Take the 2 subway train to last stop in Brooklyn, Flatbush Station where you'll meet coleader Mark wearing Sundance cap before boarding the Q35 bus to Ft. Tilden. The bus stop is near Applebee's and Target (restrooms available). Exit the bus at first stop after crossing the Marine Park Bridge. (Make sure to request the stop while going over the bridge).

-Ferry from Wall Street to Rockaway. Take free shuttle bus going west. Go as far west as possible. In winter, shuttle does not go all the way to Ft. Tilden. About a 7 minute walk west.

-Far Rockaway/Jfk A train (not Leffert's blvd A train) to Broad Channel, transfer to the Shuttle "S" train (same platform) to last stop Beach 116th street. Take Q22 bus to last stop, "Roxbury."
