Why Do We Join Meetup Groups? Have you ever felt a bit embarrassed about joining a meetup group? Recently, I came across some Reddit discussions where people shared their reasons for joining Meetup, with a few admitting they felt embarrassed about it. One recurring myth was that people join meetup groups because they don’t have friends.

Why I Joined Meetup: I’ve been on Meetup since 2013, when I moved to Toronto from Hamilton and wanted to expand my circle and specifically connect with more Black women. The idea that Meetup members join only because they don’t have friends isn’t true. Though I haven’t always been active due to work, school, and personal life, I’ve met some wonderful people through Meetup who have close friendships inside and outside the platform. Some have become good friends, and like me, many have a range of interests. (And let’s face it, I don’t expect my friends to keep up with all my neurodivergent interests and fixations 😂).

The SWaNK Community: As SWaNKS, we understand why we have this unique space as child-free, unmarried women. I thought it would be a great chance to connect and discuss what brought us here and what keeps us coming back. Looking forward to hearing everyone’s thoughts!

  • Discussion Questions:
  1. 🌟 What first motivated you to join a Meetup group? Was it a specific interest, a desire to meet people, or something else?
  2. 🤔 Did you have any expectations going in? How have those been met or challenged?
  3. 👥 What types of connections have you made through Meetup? Have you met people you wouldn’t have otherwise?
  4. 📅 How active do you stay in Meetup groups? Are there certain events or groups that keep you coming back?

✨ Part 2 of this discussion will focus on Meetup’s impact on your life, especially with SWaNK. Have you met people you connect with and formed lasting friendships?
