FAQs
- Where can I learn more about the language exchange?
Check us out on Instagram @taipeilanguageexchange
- Should I buy a drink?
Yes, the coffee shop asks each person to purchase a drink. They also serve food, but that doesn’t count toward the one drink per person drink minimum.
- Can I bring a friend?
Before you do, please have your friend reach out to the person in charge (LINE ID: miketoy). This way he/she can have a quick conversation about language goals with your friend to make sure it’s a good fit. We’ll also send them this FAQ so that your friend understands the guidelines.
- How do I keep in touch with people I meet?
Feel free to ask them if you can add their LINE.
- What’s the structure of the language exchange?
This is a 2-hour event. One hour will be in English and the other Chinese. The purpose of this is to make it a real language exchange so both English and Chinese speakers can benefit from each other.
- What’s the goal of the language exchange?
It’s an opportunity to practice your target language and for you to help someone else. Hopefully, you’ll make lifelong friends.
- If someone says or does something that makes me feel uncomfortable what should I do?
Please let the person in charge know as soon as possible.
- Do I have to speak or can I just listen?
If it’s your first time, you’re welcome to just listen if you’re more comfortable. Hopefully, in subsequent visits you’ll start speaking so that you can build your confidence.
- If I want people to correct my spoken language, what should I do?
Please say to the people at your table, “If I say something wrong or you don’t understand please let me know.” Unless you make it clear to others that you are inviting feedback, it is assumed that you don’t.
- What happens if someone at my table isn’t speaking?
Invite them to say something like, “What are your thoughts about (current topic)?” Some people might be too shy to speak up, but when prompted they will. Also, please don’t dominate the table and go into 20-minute speeches. Keep what you say under two minutes to allow others to chime in.
- What exactly do we talk about at our tables?
Feel free to speak about any topic you like. If you can’t think of one, google “ice breaker questions” and use them as prompts.
- Are there any conversation topics that are not allowed?
This language exchange is not for you if you're looking for one night stands. Please refrain from profanity or talking about sex. Do not promote or sell multi-level marketing products or services. The person in charge reserves the right to deny entry or ask you to leave if you violate this without notice.
- What are the costs?
150 NTD (New Taiwan Dollar) for entry. If you’re a student you get a 50 NTD discount so it’ll just be 100 NTD.
