**Details**: (OK, we did this hike on May 1, but we must repeat it for our C2C patch!) For those who don't remember, the canyon is named after John Clevenger and his family, who settled in San Pasqual Valley in 1872 to begin wheat and dairy farming. The Clevenger home was the oldest house in the valley until it was lost in the October 2007 wildfires. The South Trail is populated by low-lying coastal sage scrub and taller, denser southern mixed chaparral. The trail splits to reach three summits: one at 1550 feet on the west fork with sweeping views of San Pasqual Valley, and peaks at 1635 and 1755 feet on the east fork, which have views of Boden Canyon and beyond to Palomar Mountain, Volcan Mountain, and the Laguna Mountains. We will make an effort to cover all 3 summits.
The highlight of this hike is clambering up to sit on a pair of lawn chairs anchored to a boulder, offering epic views down into San Pasqual Canyon.
After the hike, there is an optional stop at the San Diego Archaeological Center ($5) and San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park.
**Distance**: 5 miles, about 6.8 miles with optional 3rd summit.
**Elevation**: 1,174 elevation gain
**Pace**: Moderate (2-3 mph), depending on terrain
**Toilets**: none
**Parking:** Highway 78. This is east of Escondido, the San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and 4.0 miles east of San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park/San Diego Archaeological Center. Parking lot is on the right, south side of the road. It is easy to bypass, so be watchful. No toilets.
**Bring**: hiking poles if useful – good uphill climb, water, sunscreen.
