Let's keep this end of the year hike tradition going! Please join us in this beautiful hike with friends on The Day Before Christmas!

Pristine wilderness experience...Oak woodland, riparian habitat, mountain view tops, & sweeping panoramas. Come hike Hell Hole Canyon in nearby Valley Center (1712 acres!) During winter & early spring, water happily spills over smooth boulders under a canopy of spreading live oaks & twisted sycamores.

Distance: 7-8 miles round trip Total Elevation gain/loss: 1000' Hiking Time: 3.0-4.0 hours.

So, why is it called 'Hell Hole Canyon'? According to Jerry Schad: "...a century ago, travelers had a "hell" of a time getting their wagons across the rain-swollen creek while on the Escondido to Palomar Road-hence the stream's colorful name!"

Please remember to bring: daypack, water (1-2 quarts), good hiking shoes/boots, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, snacks, layers of clothing, & other essentials.

Note: Your GPS will likely not find the correct route. Please follow these directions and allow extra time in case you get lost!

Getting there From Escondido California: I-15, exit Valley Parkway, travel east about 6 miles to Lake Wohlford Road, turn right. Go up the hill, past the lake about 3 miles, turn right on Paradise Mountain Road, at the first stop sign you encounter.

Continue on Paradise Mtn. Road. It ends at Los Hermanos Ranch Road, turn right, prepare to....Take the first immediate jog left onto Kiavo Road, drive to the bottom of the hill The entrance to Hellhole Canyon Preserve is to the left at the end of Kiavo Drive.
