Saturday Evening Scritpless Soap Opera - Long-form Impro Dojo Special Series!
Details
Scriptless Soap Opera
September through December, 2024, the Long-form Saturday Workshop is focusing on Scriptless Soap Operas, ending with a costumed student showcase show at Studio Gokko!
In this workshop, we'll be focusing on a format that Improvazilla Director Chris Wells studied at Impro Theatre in Los Angeles. The format is TV-show style, with no breaking of the fourth wall, and involves choosing to play archetypal characters that fit within a long-running fictional soap opera.
Key Learning Points:
- Soap Blocking: How to block your scenes in a way that is more theatrical and dramatic.
- Character POV’s & Relationships: You'll discover how to develop memorable characters and dynamic relationships on the spot through specific points of view (POV), and how that leads to relationships. Through exercises and games, we'll delve into character creation, physicality, and emotional depth.
- Story: Understanding the core of a scene is crucial for finding bedrock of your scenes, playing off relationships and characters leads to humor. We'll explore how to identify and heighten the unusual or interesting elements within a scene to both keep audiences engaged and generate laughs.
- Teamwork and Support: Long-form improv is all about collaboration. You'll learn the importance of supporting your scene partners, actively listening, and building upon each other's ideas to create cohesive and engaging scenes.
- Initiation and Agreement: We'll explore techniques for confidently initiating scenes and establishing the who, what, and where. Learning to say "yes, and..." will be emphasized to keep scenes flowing smoothly and to avoid blocking.
- Edit and Callbacks: Learning when and how to end scenes is essential for maintaining momentum in long-form improv. We'll also explore the power of callbacks to create connections.
Workshops are held at Studio Gokko near Yoyogi-Koen and Hatagaya, close to the restaurant Hoff, and this 3-hour workshop costs ¥3,000. Bring exact change if you can, please. And careful with the map here on Meetup! Some report it leads them to the next street over. Use this Google location if you have any problems: https://goo.gl/maps/w4f6GgXbYG5u2YvW7
Thanks,
Chris
Apres-improv Socializing
After the workshop, students can walk across the street to Hoff, a great restaurant for food, drink and conversation, so it's educational and social!
***
The Improv Foundation Workshops are open workshops, so any native-level English speaker is free to come and give it a try.
Diversity Policy
We strive to create a welcoming atmosphere for everyone, regardless of minority status. Continued participation is at the discretion of the instructors. So be positive and nice to your fellow improvisors! Also, we're all adults here, but hitting on people isn't cool in a workshop. Just saying.

PS: Studio Gokko is about a ten-minute walk from the following stations: Hatsudai, Hatagaya, Yoyogi-koen, and Yoyogi-hachiman.
The GPS should take you right there, but just in case, we are very close to a restaurant called Hoff: http://hoff-restaurant.com
TCS Studio Gokko is in the basement of an orange-tiled building with a cleaners and glass shop on the first floor, and our door is on the very left-hand side, next to the glass shop, which has グラス written on its shutter. Look for the Studio Gokko logo on the door!
