What we’re about
This is a TTRPG group focused on playing Burning Wheel Headquarters games, particularly Burning Wheel itself and Torchbearer. The goal is to build a community of enthusiasts in the Colorado Springs area to help foster local in-person play groups.
Often recommended and very polarizing, Burning Wheel is a very unique game. It is deep and demanding in ways different and sometimes antithetical to norms on both the traditional and indie narrative sides of the TTRPG world. It is highly dramatic and mechanical at the same time and requires strong PC driven play. A lot of people bounce off of it, but to some of us there are some amazing things that this game does that are hard to replicate in other games. It is also notoriously hard to find a Burning Wheel group. This meetup is meant to (maybe? hopefully?) pull together at least a small group of individuals interested in what the game does and willing to play and study it together. No previous experience is required, but interested parties should know that it takes a certain amount of effort and buy in to make this game do what it is suppose to do. It's best to do a bit of research on the game before giving it a whirl.
Torchbearer is a game in many ways derived and simplified from Burning Wheel's system but with a grim Norse fantasy dungeon-adventure survival theme all its own (with special mechanics to support this). It is in many ways BWHQ's love letter to classic D&D and does the dangerous resource constrained dungeon crawl better than most games, imho.
A final note, this group is intended to be fully BWHQ focused. There are lots of other cool games out there, traditional big-press games and modern small-press games and everything in between. I like to play some of those games, too. Finding BWHQ games players however seems much harder, so I created this group to stay focused and hopefully protect the desire to build a small local Burning Wheel community from being buried under other more popular game chatter.
