What we’re about

Inspired by the philosophical insights of G.K. Chesterton, "Do not remove a fence until you know why it was put up in the first place, Chesterton went on to explain why this principle holds true, writing that fences don't grow out of the ground, nor do people build them in their sleep or during a fit of madness."

The Chesterton Fence Inquiry is a discussion group dedicated to training the mental muscles of inquiry to better comprehend our world and ourselves in it. Through structured dialogue, we aim to raise awareness about the ways of thinking, examine thought patterns and mental heuristics.

Our meetings focus on engaging with a world filled with unexpected abstract fences, with inquisitiveness and curiosity. In the endeavour to understand the world and society at large, we begin with the exploration of ourselves and our own embedded mental models
