Roxbury Mine Hills Preserve, Picnic afterwards.
Details
This is a 6 mile hike.
Roxbury Land Trust’s Mine Hill Preserve is on the National Register of Historic places – and for good reason! It contains significant stone and brick structural remains associated with a cold fired blast furnace that reached peak production following the Civil War. There are nine selfguided interpretive stations along the trail, which includes a variety of habits from riverine vegetation and open fields to broadleaf woodlands. The trail passes nearby iron mine tunnels and charcoal hearths associated with the furnace. Bats now hibernate in the mine shafts and a maturing forest covers land once cleared for charcoal.
