What we’re about
The Humanist Being is a nonprofit organization dedicated to critical thinking, scientific reason, as well as empathy and a call to serve and uplift our neighbors.
We are secular humanists. Our values and vision are based on the observable world and on scientific principles. We value living the examined life and loving the people we are with. We find hope for the future in the work we are doing now. We are against dogma of any kind. We follow 12 Ethical Commitments that represent our shared humanistic values and principles. Join us if you'd like to get to know other humanists and help build new programs around a secular humanist vision. Click here to view a short video about our visioning process. Here are a few of our planned Meetups for 2024:
Secular Sundays. From May-November, we meet monthly on the Third Sunday to gather, sing, talk about things, and have fun. After the service we do a project together to serve the local community. We meet at the North Star Community Hall in Burlington, Vermont,
The Civil Conversations Club is based on the book How To Have Impossible Conversations. We are learning and practicing the skills to have open-hearted, open-minded conversations with people we disagree with. (The process is known as Street Epistemology.) Reading the book is NOT necessary.
Game Nights and Discussion Groups provide an opportunity to have fun and make connect with others in person or online.
