This is a **photographers ‘long weekend’ to Athens** an exciting and vibrant city with a rich history and plenty to turn our cameras onto. Photogenic subjects in **Athens** include - **The Acropolis** - **The House of Caryatides in Keramikos** (famously captured by Cartier-Bresson) - **Monastiraki market** - **Onassis Stegi** - **Lycabettus Hill** by cable car - **The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre** - **Plaka Neighbourhood** \- and **Mikrolimano, Pireas**. On one of our days we can catch a **ferry to a nearby Greek island such as Aegina/Agistri/Poros** and close enough for a fish lunch by the sea, and a day return boat trip back to Athens. During our long weekend we look at **current photography themes** and practice photography with a series of mini projects in the streets of Athens. You may be interested in extending your stay either before or after our long weekend.

**Local food specialities** include *Taramasalata* (fish roe dip), *Greek salad*, *garides tiganites* (fried shrimp) and *barbounia* (fried red mullet), *Athenian* (a type of tiny fish), *hortopita* (a freshly baked pie with wild greens), *lahanodolmades* (stuffed cabbage leaves), *feta cheese* (sprinkled with olive oil and oregano) *Tzatziki* (Greek yoghurt, garlic and cucumber dip) ….. and for desert *galaktoboureko* (a syrupy, buttery custard pie), *loukoumades* (Greek doughnuts), and *Ouzo* or *tsipouro* (like grappa) on ice.

**Accommodation**
We meet up in the Plaka district on Saturday morning so please stay somewhere in easy reach of this location. Like all sprawling cities, Athens has areas that are safer than others so you are advised to do some online research before booking your accommodation. Areas that are recommended as safe include.

* Plaka - The heart of old Athens
* Kolonaki - Upscale and chic
* Koukaki - near the Acropolis, but quiet
* Syntagma - the heartbeat of Athens Try Airbnb OR Expedia which is also good for combined deals for travel and accommodation offers.

**Safety :** please be pickpocket aware. A money belt for valuables, passport, money etc is recommended, and a secure bag for your camera. Do not bring unnecessary valuables.

**Travel**
Flights to Athens Airport with Ryanair, Easyjet. Departure back to UK on Monday is not advised as it is a full Meetup day.

**Cost**
**The fee is £190 for the 3 days of workshops**. A £70 deposit is required to reserve your place, with the final £120 due 4 weeks prior to our meeting up.
