The Normal Book Group

The Secret History, Donna Tartt's first novel. I only know one thing about Donna Tartt, and one thing about this book. Donna Tartt wrote The Goldfinch recently that was well talked about. And this book has garnered some kind of cult status; there are art exhibits dedicated to it.

It's long, six weeks. Week 6 this week.

It was fun last year reading Postman Always Rings Twice before Thanksgiving (maybe it was Christmas, whatever). This year let's read Jim Thompson, The Grifters. It should only take a week to read, and for those of you around the Tuesday before Thanksgiving we'll meet to talk about it.

Here's the synopsis of the book: "Roy DIllon seems too handsome and well-mannered to be a professional con man. So, Let's read this pretty short novel called Mysterious Skin by Scott Heim. It was his first novel. He's from Kansas. The book was made into a movie starring Joseph Love Hewitt. This week we'll read the first third.

Haruki Murakami has a new book out! Rather than waiting to see the consensus (and who has worst opinions than the Consensus? Have you ever met that guy?), let's be the first ones on the block to read it. It doesn't come out till 11/19, so I can't tell how long it is yet, but it's 464 pages. So we'll go with 5 weeks for now, but maybe shorten it to 4.

This week, read the first one-fifth.
