See all- November Book Club - "North Woods" by Daniel MasonDESTIHL Brewery and Beer Hall, Normal, IL
The catamount--the large wild cat that once prowled the woods of Vermont over 100 years ago, now lives on only in the logo of the University of Vermont. It also graces the cover of our book club selection!
This month we are reading North Woods by Daniel Mason (2023). It is an ambitious novel that follows the history of a home across three centuries. Describing this book is quite a challenge, so I will hand the duties off to Rand Richards Cooper at the New York Times:
"North Woods is a hodgepodge narrative, brazenly disjointed in time, perspective and form. Letters, poems and song lyrics, diary entries, medical case notes, real-estate listings, vintage botanical illustrations, pages of an almanac, modern-day nature photographs, a true-crime detective story, an address to a historical society: Mason stuffs all this (and more!) into his bulging scrapbook of a novel."
If that sound appealing to you (and it should!), join us at our event in November. And if you are interested in learning more catamount facts, please visit: ttps://vermonthistoryexplorer.org/the-last-catamount-in-vermont
Please bring a book recommendation for a future meetup!
