Nietzsche's "Eternal recurrence" - A precursor to existentialism?
Details
Join us as we dive into Nietzsche’s profound and challenging concept of *eternal recurrence* to welcome the New Year! This event invites you to explore a thought experiment in which you imagine your life, with all its details and complexities, repeating endlessly without any possibility of change. This idea challenges us to consider whether we live in a way we’d be willing to repeat forever, ultimately encouraging a mindset of “amor fati,” or the love of fate.
I will argue that the eternal recurrence has an influence in the search for authenticity that the existentialist writers explored in the 20th century.
We’ll kick things off with a short introductory talk on Nietzsche’s 'eternal recurrence'. Afterward, members will vote on key questions to guide our discussion, then break into small groups for a deeper dive into these topics. Each group will share their insights in a collaborative wrap-up, giving everyone the chance to explore life’s meaning and our choices through Nietzsche’s lens. Come ready for introspection and inspiring conversation!
