The PM Hikers

WhereAmEye (Tall Mark) has been doing this hike up the Chumash Trail in Simi Valley every Thursday night since the Jurassic Period, and he'll be leading this event until the Ice Age, i.e. this hike always happens, even when it rains, snows, hails, or blows. The only exception is when it's on fire (or Mark sprains his knee).

It's mostly a steady climb to where the trail meets with the Rocky Peak Fire Road. When you get to the 'slippery' part just over a mile up, ask him who was responsible for Kurt breaking his ankle there in 2012, but don't believe whatever he tells you. (Just kidding, Mark, don't get touchy!)

Difficulty: Intermediate - hard for beginners

Dogs: Yes, but must be leashed

Restrooms: No

Water Fountain: No

Parking: Free at trailhead

Trail: Out and back, single track, rugged

Sunset: Varies, but bring a headlamp or flashlight when needed!

Known Dangers: Rattlesnakes, slip-'n-fall, COVID-19 infected hikers

Bring:

Flashlight/headlamp when it's dark

Sunscreen and hat when it's not (It gets hot as Hades in summer)

LOTS of H20 when it's hot (maybe 2L if you sweat a lot)

This is an easy hike with sweeping views of both Simi and the SF Valleys from atop the eastern ridge of the Simi Hills, and is close to many of our members. Sunset will be over 1.5 hours before the hike, so we’ll be in twilight and dark (yes, bring a light). We will meet in the lower parking lot and regroup at the upper lot, about 1/4 mile up the road inside the gate.
The rocks here are quite amazing, it's a hidden gem of local hikes. About halfway, we’ll Do a check about climbing our “sunset view” rock, as it can be a challenge in the dark. We’ll be doing the loop clockwise, so we’ll do a steep downhill at the beginning (avoiding having the steep uphill at the end!). On the way down, we’ll get to see the fringe of the old Rockwell/Boeing rocket test facility (long since closed) on our left, then we’ll gain elevation and reach the junction for the “sunset view” rock. We’ll just stop there and wait for everyone to collect. The side trip up the rock (if we take it on) will give us great views of Simi Valley and points west. We’ll then continue on north and east to get back up to the parking lot. Heads up: there will be two forks where you can veer left. If you do that, you’ll go visit a cell tower, but you won’t find the parking lot, so veer right instead. We’ll be back to the upper lot very shortly after that fork.

Directions: If you live in Simi, it's possible to get here from Box Canyon or even north Black Canyon, but more straightforward if you follow the directions below, somewhat modified but otherwise snarfed from another group's description:
From the 118 go on Topanga Canyon south and turn right on Plummer. Continue until road curves to the left and turns into Valley Circle and then Lake Manor Drive. Go until you reach a three way stop at Woolsey Canyon. (Make sure you go past Box Canyon and continue to Woolsey.) Turn right on Woolsey and follow the windy road to the top. Turn right on Black Canyon Rd (N American Cutoff Road) where the water tower is. Parking lot is about 1/8th of a mile on the left by a gate.
From the 101 exit at Valley Circle and go North. Continue until you pass Roscoe Blvd. When you get to the three way stop at Woolsey Canyon turn left and and follow the windy road to the top. Turn right on Black Canyon Rd (N American Cutoff Road) where the water tower is. Parking lot is about 1/8th of a mile on the left by a gate.
Parking: There is a small free parking area just as you turn in and before the gate. If that is full (it generally has plenty of space), you'll need to drive a SHORT distance up the road where it will cost you a few ($5) bucks, and figures to be closed if we arrive near/after dusk.

Bring: Flashlight/headlamp, charged and ready to go.
Dress for the weather. Temps figure to start in the low-60s dipping to the lmid-50s by hike's end. As of posting, the forecast shows a 20mph 'breeze', so bring a windbreaker. I will post updates if there are significant changes, so watch for comments to this hike.
