Saturday November 16, 2024, let's hike Tapia Canyon that include natural bridges, slot canyons, tower ruins and huge panels of petroglyphs.

Tapia Canyon is a great out and back hike: beautiful scenery, petroglyphs, ruins, two natural bridges, and a deep narrow and tall slot canyon!

Two miles into the hike the trail branches uphill to the 'Tower Ruins', is a reconstructed ancient site worth seeing.

Near there on a small bench area above the main canyon is a petroglyph panel a with a spectacular collection of deer, elk, and various symbols to enjoy.

After 4.4 miles in, a natural bridge sits parallel to the main canyon. Under the bridge is access to the deep narrow and tall slot canyon.

Round trip hike mileage is 9.3 miles and total climb is 399 feet and the estimated hike duration is 4 hours.

Meet at 9:00 AM at Home Depot in Bernalillo just west of the storage sheds to carpool. One way drive mileage is estimated to be 75 miles. There will not be other carpool meet locations for this hike. Contributions of about $15 for your driver's gasoline would be appreciated.

Regarding driving conditions, the dirt roads that make up the last 25 miles of the drive are quite variable. Typically the roads are smooth and fast up to the Guadalupe ghost town where a deep arroyo (just 2.5 miles before Tapia trailhead) can be tricky to cross through. Beyond that, when dry and recently graded any car can make it to Tapia canyon with ease but with mud, ice and snow, a high clearance 4x4 is needed. I will drive my Toyota Tacoma 4 door 4x4 and have room for 3 passengers.
