SUMMARY
Located in the East Bay Hills and Oakland, CA; a hidden redwood forest lies off Redwood Road just a few miles over the ridge from downtown Oakland. The forest's peaceful groves give little evidence of the park's bustling past – in the mid-1800s the area was the scene of extensive logging to supply building materials for the San Francisco Bay Area. The logging era has passed, and a forest of second and third growth redwoods has replaced those cut down. We will hike the Stream Trail, Bridle Trail, Orchard Trail, French Trail, West Ridge Trail, and Stream Trail for about 8 miles with an overall elevation gain of about 1,200 feet through mostly second and third growth redwood forest in the 1,830 arce Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park, which is part of the East Bay Regional Parks District.

HIKING INFORMATION AND ESSENTIALS
DIFFICULTY: Moderate to hard due to some hills.
DISTANCE: About 8 miles.

ELEVATION: About 1,200 feet cumulative or overall.

ROUTE: Start at Stream Trailhead next to Canyon Meadow Staging Area, then hike on Stream Trail for .4 mile, then turn left and hike on a connector trail for about 300 feet, then turn left and hike on Bridle Trail for .2 mile, then turn right and hike uphill on Orchard Trail for .4 mile, then turn right and hike uphill and downhill on French Trail for about 3.6 miles, then turn right and hike on West Ridge Trail for about .5 mile, then turn right and hike downhill and on the Stream Trail for 1.9 miles, then turn right and hike on Bridle Trail for .73 mile, then turn left and hike on connector trail for about 300 feet, then turn right and hike on Stream Trail for .4 mile back to Canyon Meadow Staging Area.

SUMMARY
On this hike in Auburn State Recreation Area and lower foothills of the Sierras, we will hike the American Canyon Trail, Wendell Robie Trail, Dead Truck Trail, and American Canyon Trail downhill to the Middle Fork of the American River, then hike uphill on American Canyon Trail back to the starting point for about 6 miles with an overall elevation gain of about 1,500 feet.
American Creek Canyon has the prettiest trail in the Auburn State Recreation Area.

Continue straight on Hwy 49 across Lincoln Way down into the canyon
Follow Hwy 49 to the RIGHT across the bridge toward Cool
From the stop sign in Cool
LEFT onto Hwy 193 toward Georgetown and drive 5.3 miles
LEFT onto Sweetwater Trail (a paved street) which is opposite Pilgrim Court on the right
(Sometimes the sign to Sweetwater is missing)
The trailhead is on the right at the end of the street before the gates to Auburn Lake Trails.
Parking at the trailhead is limited, but you can turn around and park along the shoulder.

HIKING INFORMATION AND ESSENTIALS
HIKING LEVEL: Intermediate or hard due to the steep climb on the way back up.

HIKING DISTANCE: About 6 miles.
ELEVATION: About 1,500 feet in overall elevation gain.

HIKING ROUTE:
From the "third gate" trailhead, we will hike downhill on the American Canyon Trail for 1 mile, then turn rigth onto the Wendell Robie Trail and hike downhill and uphill for about 1.5 miles,
then turn left onto the Dead Truck Trail and hike downhill for .6 mile or 6/10 of a mile, then turn rigth and hike downhill on the American Canyon Trail to the river for .4 mile or 4/10 of a mile.
We'll stop for a 30 minute break at the Middle Fork of American River. And will hike uphill on the American Canyon Trail for about 2.4 miles back to our cars. Dogs okay.

ESSENTIALS: Bring snacks/small lunch, water, hiking shoes/boots, hiking poles for steep hills if needed, first aid kit, insect repellent spray, sun protection (hat, sunglassess, etc), and warm clothing for cold morning temps.

Morning walkers, meet at the parking lot by Sculpture Park, Miner' s Ravine Trail, Roseville. Sculpture Park is across the street from the Roseville Auto Mall. Drive to the parking lot of the 24-Hour Fitness Center. Meet at the smaller parking lot to the south of the fitness center.

We walk toward the east end of Miner's Ravine Trail near Sierra College Blvd. We stop for a brief time and walk back. We walk about 3 miles an hour, and the entire walk takes about 2 hours, almost 6 miles total.
