**MILL END** is a small hamlet in South Buckinghamshire situated on the River a few miles from Henley and consists of about fifty houses , the old mill and Mill End Farm.

**HAMBLEDEN MILL** sits on the site of mills that date back to the Norman Conquest and is mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. It stands at an important place on the river at the foot of a deep valley which penetrates into the heart of the Chilterns.

**HAMBLEDEN LOCK** was a flash lock in the 11th century and a flash lock with a winch in 1338. The first pound lock was built in the 1770s
**MILL END WEIR BRIDGE** was built in 1884 with new weirs and a walkway consisting of a number of catwalks to re-open this ancient right of way. The most recent rebuild was in 1994.
The mentioned of the mill in Doomsday Book implies there was also a weir here at that time. There is aldso a reference to the weir with a winch in 1338.

**TEMPLE ISLAND** sits in the middle of the river and was built in 1771 as a summerhouse and fishing lodge for Fawley Court.

**THE FAWLEY COURT** **ESTATE** originates in the early medieval period. The parkland that surrounded the house and grounds was created from drained flood meadow. The present house was built in 1684 on the site of an earlier manor house and the gardens were created later during the 1770s.
**REMENHAM** is Anglo-Saxon meaning either ‘the home of the Raven’ or ‘the home of the Remi’ a Celtic tribe that roamed and hunted in the area. It is mentioned in the Domesday Book and again in 1075 in the charters of Westminster Abbey. Evidence of Roman occupation has also been found. There was once a flourishing village centred around the old church, but almost the entire village was wiped out in 1664 during the Black Death.

**REMENHAM PARISH CHURCH** is Norman in origin, but has been subsequently rebuilt. Most of the present church dates from the fourteenth century and saw the Black Death.
**ASTON RISE & RIDGE PATH** has been walked for about 10,000 years. Looking down at the ground and you will find worked flints that have been left by our ancestors. Most are Neolithic scrapers that were used by hunters.

**ASTON** is a hamlet set back from the Thames by one short access lane. No properties front the river here as it is left as natural flood plain and used for grazing.

**THE FLOWERPOT INN** was built in 1890 and is a free house offering traditional and modern fayre. In the bars you will find open fires and a collection of cased fish adorning the walls. It has a picturesque beer garden outside and has in its time been used as a location for films and TV shows such as Miss Marple and Pie in the Sky.

**THE GRASSY LANE** that leads down to the river from Aston is called “The Lady Moor”’. It was once a picturesque avenue of fine ash trees but only a few now remain. The trees that border the lane towards the river are now a favourite roosting and nesting site for red kites that were reintruduced in the 1990s.
**ASTON FERRY** once ran from the slipway at the end of Aston Ferry Lane. In 1785 it was a horse drawn rope ferry where the towpath changes to the other side of the river. It is believed to have been in operation until 1920.

**MILL END ROMAN VILLA**was situated at the north end of Thames Field in Mill End on the north side of the river. A survey has found that the villa has many rooms and a high resistance area in the central part is most likely a mosaic floor. There is also evidence of a much earlier Iron Age ring ditch on the site.
