Hopkins Demonstration Forest Tour

Details

Join us for a 3-5 mile walking tour of Hopkins Demonstration Forest, offering an immersive experience in the natural beauty and ecological diversity of Oregon's forested landscapes, showcasing sustainable forestry practices and native ecosystems.

We will wander through a variety of forest environments, including mixed hardwood and coniferous forests, wetlands, and meadows. The tour takes us along well-maintained paths, with occasional stops at educational displays and demonstration sites where forest management practices, such as selective thinning and replanting, are explained.

The site hosts a number of educational projects, including research plots on topics like forest health, carbon sequestration, and invasive species management, offering a deeper understanding of contemporary conservation challenges.

Hopkins is home to the Molalla Log House, a historic log cabin, originally located in Molalla, Oregon. This cabin is perhaps the oldest extant building in Oregon, if not the Pacific Northwest, built c. 1790, and, the relocated Clatskanie Mountain Fire Lookout Tower, originally erected in 1954 as part of the Oregon Department of Forestry’s fire protection program in the north Oregon Coast Range east of Astoria.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a student of forestry, or simply looking for a peaceful stroll, Hopkins provides both a tranquil escape into the woods and a deeper appreciation for sustainable land stewardship.

Please bring a lunch to enjoy by the fire in the Poppino Pavilion and participate in woodland-inspired wreath making. Be prepared for rain and wear sturdy hiking shoes.

This is a free event, however, donations to Hopkins Demonstration Forest are appreciated.
