What we’re about
Tri-State Freethinkers is a social, academic, and activist group for those in Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana. At our monthly meetings we learn from local experts and organizations about the science of our world, experiences of those from different backgrounds, and causes that could use our help. We provide many volunteer opportunities for our members to be active in the community and have recently been recognized by the Foundation Beyond Belief for our work. We actively seek out civil rights violations, church state violations, and ways to combat them at the local and national levels.

Mark grew up in a strict Christian fundamentalist community. Ironically, it was his keen hunger for knowledge and truth, which began in early childhood, that saved him. Armed with his own intellect, he managed to break free from his absurd religious environment to pursue a brilliant career in the sciences.
Mark will regale us with stories of breathtaking experiences with cognitive dissonance in people--people who are highly educated, generous, and truly care about others. But they're trapped in the ever-growing trend of science denial.
He is fearlessly critical of religion’s dangerous lies and yet has only compassion for the human beings caught up in them. He articulates some very inconvenient, uncomfortable, and alarming truths about where we will end up if the social schism—fueled primarily by religion—in this country isn’t repaired soon.
Mark sets an outstanding example of how to coexist with people who see our very complicated world as either good or evil. We all must work to acquire this vital skill. It’s the only way to avoid the very real threat of this country descending into authoritarianism. Even those of us who can tear apart religious apologetics in our sleep have much to learn from Mark.
