**About this Meetup:** We'll take a hike at Montauk Point, visit and climb up the Montauk Lighthouse, hike Camp Hero State Park, then we go eat and drinks in Montauk Village.

**ABOUT MONTAUK:** 120 miles from New York Harbor and about a two-hour drive from one end to the other - they weren’t kidding when they named it Long Island - but those who choose to make the trek out to the island’s easternmost point are surely rewarded, and that prize is MONTAUK, a village at the east end of the Long Island peninsula, known for its beaches, like Ditch Plains, with its strong Atlantic surf.

**GETTING TO MONTAUK:** Long Island Railroad (LIRR)

**TRAIN SCHEDULE:**

* **If you are leaving from GRAND CENTRAL in Manhattan: T**ake the LIRR train leaving at 7:39AM, **transfer at Jamaica Station** at 8:13AM, and arrive in Montauk at 10:55AM. ONE-WAY OFF-PEAK ticket is $23.50
* **If you are leaving from PENN STATION in Manhattan: T**ake the LIRR train leaving at 7:48AM, **transfer at Jamaica Station** at 8:13AM, and arrive in Montauk at 10:55AM. ONE-WAY OFF-PEAK ticket is $23.50
* **If you are leaving from ATLANTIC TERMINAL in Brooklyn:** Take the LIRR train leaving at 7:44AM, transfer at Jamaica Station at 8:13AM, and arrive in Montauk at 10:55AM. ONE-WAY OFF-PEAK TICKET IS $23.50
* **If you are leaving from JAMAICA STATION in Queens:** Take the LIRR train leaving at 8:13AM, arriving in Montauk at 10:55AM. ONE-WAY OFF-PEAK TICKET IS $20.25

We will arrive in MONTAUK at 10:58AM. There are usually plenty of taxis waiting to pick up passengers. We'll share an Uber or taxi to take us into town.

**AGENDA**: For today we will take a hike through Montauk Point State Park and adjacent Camp Hero State Park, as well as visit the Montauk Lighthouse.

**About** **Montauk Point State Park:** On the eastern tip of the South Shore of Long Island, **[Montauk Point State Park](https://parks.ny.gov/parks/montaukpoint/details.aspx)** offers stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean where it meets the Block Island Sound. The view is unique, because, when the water is calm, visitors can clearly see the "race" of converging tides from the Atlantic and Block Island Sound. Visitors can also use the nature trails to hike or cross-country ski, or spend time watching the seals sun on the rocks offshore. Block Island can be seen off in the distance.

**About** **Camp Hero State Park: Camp Hero** encopasses 415 acres of diverse landscape including heavily wooded areas, a long expanse of beachfront along the Atlantic Ocean, and an historic military installation. Specific features of Camp Hero are magnificent pristine maritime forests, freshwater wetlands, spectacular ocean vistas and dramatic bluffs rising from the beach. An extensive system of trails is available for hiking, biking and horseback riding. An undisturbed environment shelters bountiful wildlife and an abundance of birds.

**While in Montauk -- You cannot be in Montauk and not visit the** **[Montauk Point Lighthouse](https://montaukhistoricalsociety.org/montauk-point-lighthouse/)**, the first lighthouse in New York State. In 1792, the Lighthouse was authorized by the Second Congress, and commissioned by President George Washington himself. Construction of the Montauk Lighthouse began on June 7, 1796 and was completed on November 5, 1796. This National Historic Landmark has been part of Long Island's land and seascape for over 200 years and still serves as an active aid to navigation.
