What we’re about
Here we read stories, meet, eat, and talk about what we read.
The particulars, if you please...
- We have an alternating model; #1 is reading stories, #2 is reading from anything of your choice; discussions are part of both
- Model #1: We're read 2 (or so) short stories for each meeting. These will be by the same author and (cost and logistics concerns) available together in some published form.
- The choice of stories for each meeting will rotate between attendant members. We hope all will welcome their turn at it, but members may skip the story choosing component if they so desire.
- Model #2: Everyone brings their choice of something they love to read aloud in under 5 min. Can be anything; poem, love letter, fiction, phone book, anything
- Members will be lightly and gently called upon to orient others into the stories or they've chosen or the passage they're reading aloud; reasons for choice, author, other contexts, etc.
- Meetings will take place in leader's home (primarily east-bay) and be accompanied by a most-often-home-cooked supper and wine. Pot-luck is not really the model, but contributions will be welcome.
The primary pursuits are pleasures drawn from good food, close literary attention and discussion and perhaps even a tiny few touches of memorable insight. We warmly welcome all who might aspire to and enjoy such the same.
Upcoming events (1)
See all- 2 Stories from William Gass651 66th St, Oakland, CA
This time we turn to William Gass. A personal favorite, his prose is very dense, metaphoric, and visual.
- The Pederson Kid
- In the Heart of the Heart of the Country
These are in the collection 'The Heart of the Heart of the Country' which can be found here.
As always, dinner and wine will be served.
Note: I'd like to ask that members refrain from RSVPing 'Yes' unless they are very likely to come, and to please change 'Yes' responses to 'No' responses at least 1 day ahead of the meeting if you cannot come. Meal planning can be difficult with 'Yes' RSVPs that do not attend.
