What we’re about
The purpose of this sangha is to share the spirit of Ubuntu. In Buddhism, there is an understanding of interconnectedness with all beings near and far. The Ubuntu philosophy is similar in that it acknowledges the fact that we could not BE without others' existence. Our joy is connected to others' joy. Our suffering is connected to others' suffering. We prosper as a community when we accept this Truth. Together, this sangha will explore our daily experience and how our views, thoughts, speech, actions, livelihood, concentration, mindfulness and effort affect the suffering and/or joy within us and those around us.
This sangha will be based upon the Bright Dawn Center of Oneness established by Rev. Koyo Kubose in 1996 to carry on his father's (Rev. Gyomay Kubose's) lifework. I have been a Lay Minister for the Bright Dawn Center of Oneness since 2022.
"I have always dreamed of establishing an American Buddhism - different from Indian, Chinese, or Japanese Buddhism - a uniquely American Buddhism that could be easily understood and practiced by Americans and that would contribute to American life and culture. This Buddhism can be explained in simple, everyday language and practiced in every aspect of our daily life. Yet, it is a unique Buddhist life-way, non-dichotomized and non-dualistic, that will bring about a peaceful, meaningful, creative life, both individually and collectively."
-Rev. Gyomay M. Kubose
