"Surviving Storms: Finding the Strength to Meet Adversity"
Details
ONLINE BOOK STUDY & DISCUSSION: The Shingyo Sangha invites you to join our ongoing book study, where we explore Mark Nepo's insightful, inspiring and incredibly timely words of hope for navigating the turbulence of our times. Through the wisdom and power of the heart he offers a practical guide to discovering the love, courage, and strength we hold within, empowering us to rebuild our connections to each other, to appreciate the "beauty in brokenness" and transcend any challenge, regardless of what is happening in our lives and the world. His lyrical descriptions of the problems we face speak to both mind and soul, outlining "the fault lines of our refracted society" so we can compassionately understand the inner and outer sources of our current pain and chart a resilient path forward.
"...every time we meet in kindness and truth, we strengthen the immune system of the global body. Since everything is connected, everything matters, and every time you strengthen a heart, you lessen fear and violence somewhere in the world. We are all in this together, no matter what we believe or where we live."
Please feel free to drop into this book series at any time, where we contemplate sections every week and share our insights. There is no need to buy the book; we have a wonderful reader that will read parts of the text, with frequent stops for group reflection.
Note: Although this book selection is not a Buddhist teaching per se, it incorporates many of the Buddhist principles and practices that our sangha is seeking to expand and further integrate into our daily lives.

The Shingyo Sangha is a circle of friends coming together to learn from Buddhist teachings and to find out what we can extract in order to benefit us on the path. We call our approach "Applied Buddhism": Buddhism without the dogma, rituals and metaphysical interpretations. Shingyo is based on the Heart Sutra (http://plumvillage.org/news/thich-nhat-hanh-new-heart-sutra-translation/) and asks the question, "How can we practice the teachings of the Buddha in our day-to-day lives?"
