East Side Jam Session #5

BACK IN ACTION NOW ON THE EAST SIDE!
Jeanette DePatie here. I've been holding this space for the Westside Jam Session meetup where I participated as a singer. I'm bringing back the Jam session on the east side (near Monrovia, CA).
This jam session is for musicians who want to practice playing jazz standards. We have everything from semi-pros practicing tunes for their next gig, to relative newcomers just getting started in jazz. I sing, and the rest of the instrumentation varies from week to week depending on who signs up.
To make sure everyone has a good time and never has to wait around for a chance to play, attendance is limited to usually 8 players per session. I can't guarantee a slot for everyone every time, but if you don't get in on the week you want, I'll reserve an next available slot for you in the next available session.
• Max 1 piano (electric provided), 1 guitars, 1 bass (standup or electric), 1 drummer (bring your kit), 4 horns. If more than that sign up, I will put them on the waitlist. (Accordions, mandolins, violins, ukes, etc., count as a horn.)
• If you miss a session because you are waitlisted, I will be happy to pre-RSVP you for the next available session before it's publicly posted, so you will be guaranteed a spot.
• If you need to cancel on an RSVP, please cancel immediately through the website. This will give others a chance to play.
• IMPORTANT! If you do not show up and did not cancel your RSVP with at least 4 hours notice, you're wasting a space that someone else would probably like to fill. Please don't do this. I understand if you need to cancel at the last minute on occasion, but habitual no-shows will be removed from the list.
* Note, if you have RSVP'd I will send you the address and location information directly just before the event.
WHO'S THIS FOR?
The only requirement to join us is that you are familiar with the basics of jazz and can get through simple rhythm changes and blues tunes. Bring a Real Book or I Real Pro with you, we will play out of these. We'll have some easy, slow tunes and probably some hard and fast ones, too.
SINGERS: Please see the note below about material.
Call whatever tune you want in whatever tempo and key you like, as long as it's jazz! It helps if you know the melodies for the tunes you want to call. A few tunes we often play: All Blues, Autumn Leaves, Blue Bossa, Blue Monk, Desafinado, Footprints, Girl from Ipanema, My Funny Valentine, Nostalgia in Times Square, Oleo, Rhythm-a-Ning, Satin Doll, Stella by Starlight, Take Five, etc.
Please bring a Real Book in your instrument's key, or a phone or tablet with iRealPro. I don't have any spares as I use IRealPro. If you have a piece of music you want to play that's not in Real Book 1 or 2, please bring copies for everybody.
A FEW NOTES:
EVERYBODY: Our Jam session space is outside in my backyard. We have some heaters, but please dress appropriately. I have chairs etc. Please bring a music stand for yourself.
SINGERS: If you've never attended before, I will ask you to tell me 4 jazz standards you can sing and what keys you want to sing them in. If you haven't done this work beforehand, we will lose a lot of jamming time helping you figure out your material and keys. (If you don't know what keys work for you, send me a message and I can help.) You are also invited to sing on tunes other people call, if you know the tune and can sing it in the key they call. I have a PA system and microphones, so you won't need to bring any gear. (But if you have a favorite microphone, bring it!)
KEYBOARDISTS: I have a digital keyboard, or bring your own keyboard if you prefer. I have a PA system you can play through, or you can bring an amp.
DRUMMERS: I am working to acquire a small kit but I don't have one yet. For this session, plan to bring your own kit.
GUITARISTS: Please bring your own amp. Acoustic players can use a microphone or pickup and play through the PA if they wish.
