Details

The ȽÁU,WELṈEW̱ /John Dean Park is not only important in First Nations history but is home to a stand of old-growth douglas fir and garry oak. The area also has numerous beautiful hiking trails. So, to take a look at it we’re going to bike there and then go for a hike. We’re planning a picnic at a viewpoint along the trail.

The bike portion will take us along the Lochside trail, Central Saanich road, a short unpaved trail and then quiet residential streets near the park The distance is about 54 km round-trip. The route is very flat until a 250 metre climb into the park.

The hike (Cy’s viewpoint and Mount Newton loop) will be close to 4 km. The hiking trails have some steeper sections, stairs, the usual things (roots, rocks) to trip over. Sturdy hiking shoes are highly recommended.

The small print: E-bikes that require pedaling are welcome. Please bring all the water and food that you’ll need. Layered clothing recommended, as is sunscreen and a bike lock. Please ensure you come with appropriate footwear for the hike.

Riders will not be allowed on the ride without being a paid-up member, unless you are a 1st timer, and then you STILL MUST complete the waiver as soon as you sign up. Dues would then need to be paid before your 2nd ride.

Stay tuned; watch for updates (e.g. weather delay). We'll post them here.
