Dinner and Discussion at Cova Brewery: Science and Circular Reasoning
Details
Most argue that faith is based on circular reasoning, but science is not. Science is based on evidence from the natural world, while religious belief is not. Scientific explanations are modified or abandoned when they conflict with evidence, while religious faith is not. But (there's always a "but" in philosophy), Joel Feinberg and Russ Shafer-Landau argue that "using the scientific method to judge the scientific method is circular reasoning." Scientists attempt to discover the laws of nature and predict what will happen in the future based on those laws. Does that mean science relies on faith?

"It always remains a metaphysical faith upon which our faith in science rests, that even we modern scholars, we godless ones and anti-metaphysicians, still kindle our fire too from the flame which a faith thousands of years old is kindled, that Christian faith, which was also Plato's faith, that God is truth, that truth is divine."
