COUNTRYSIDE WALK : BROXBOURNE to HERTFORD
Details
A SCENIC COUNTRYSIDE WALK primarily following the RIVER LEA from BROXBOURNE to HERTFORD followed by SOCIALISING with CHEAP FOOD and DRINKS in a convivial pub atmosphere.
History of Hertford:
The name Hertford arises from the old english word of hart, meaning a fully mature stag, and ford which is a shallow river crossing. Thus the town was established at a shallow river crossing in the River Lea at a locality where deer roamed freely.
Soon the Normans built Hertford Castle, and Hertford Priory was founded. King Henry II rebuilt the castle in stone, but in 1216, during the First Barons' War, it was besieged and captured after 25 days by Prince Louis of France. The castle was regularly visited by English royalty and in 1358, Queen Isabella, wife of Edward II, died there. The priory was dissolved in 1536 and subsequently demolished and in 1563, the Parliament of England met at the castle because of an outbreak of plague in London. Subsequently Hertford has grown and prospered as a market and county town.

Social Event:
Our walks are social walks, where the emphasis is on meeting new people, enjoying nature, healthy exercise, and fresh air. Our walks are not interrupted with running commentaries or historical lectures, although occasionally features of significance may be pointed out. As such our walks will be continuous with few stops and it is your responsibilty to keep walkers ahead in view and to follow the direction of the walk. We always end the walk at a pub with a convivial atmosphere where the socialising can continue. Be sure to join us in the pub for the whole experience!
This is a joint event with Ken's Events. For Guests who don't hold the Ken's Events Membership card there is a £8 contribution for this event.
