Mount Townsend (Hard Hike)
Details
Come join me for a holiday trip up to Mt. Townsend
Distance: 8-10 miles
Elevation Gain: 3,000-3500 ft.
Difficulty: Hard
This weekend, we will do a classic Olympics hike up to Mount Townsend. Comparable to something like Mt. Si, this trail is steep enough for some good exercise without being tricky or overly exhausting. After a few miles walking through wonderful forests, you’ll be delighted by gorgeous views of snowy mountains and ocean from up on the ridge.
There are two trailheads. We will try for the upper trailhead which makes for a hike of 8 miles 3,000 ft elevation. If it is snowed in, we will use the lower trailhead for a slightly longer hike. Be ready for either scenario.
Hiking poles are recommended and microspikes are required. This is a popular trail and there is "usually" a bootpath to the top, so snowshoes are optional but might come in handy. Otherwise, make sure you have plenty of food and water, and dress in layers so that you can stay warm and dry.

We will be taking the 7:10 ferry from Edmonds, so make sure you arrive at the Park and Ride early (6:15). We will leave promptly at 6:30 and will not wait around for stragglers.
Currently, the weather for this weekend looks good, but that can change. Please keep track of the comments and I will post a different hike if things change.
The forest road is passable for sedans, but SUVs are recommended for drivers. Riders should reimburse the driver for gas and the ferry, probably $30-40. Bring a plastic bag to place your boots in after the hike. A Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass is required to park at the trailhead.
Important: You and yourself alone are responsible for your own safety. Please know your abilities before signing up.
