What we’re about
Washington Women Outdoors (WWO) is a non-profit organization founded in the Fall of 1977 and recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) in the Spring of 1979, that is run almost entirely by volunteers. We engage in outdoor activities in the Washington, DC area where women share skills, experience, strengths, and support to enhance and expand each woman's world. We welcome women of diverse ages, races, and lifestyles. WWO provides instruction by women for women. Activities are available for all skill levels to inspire the beginner and to challenge the more advanced.
WWO members are independent women who seek adventure in the outdoors. We have a passion for hiking, biking, rock climbing, caving, backpacking, kayaking, cross country skiing, horseback riding, hang gliding, and anything that tests our strength and broadens our horizons. We enjoy meeting new people who want to travel with us to beautiful places in the wilderness. If you are open to learning new things in a supportive environment and enjoy sharing the outdoors with other women, we invite you to join us.
WWO is different than typical Meetup groups. We scout our hiking and biking trips. Each trip is led by two leaders. One leader stays at the front of the group and the second leader is the sweep. Each participant is encouraged to participate at her own pace, and the sweep is there to ensure that no one is left behind. We want each participant to go at their own pace so that they enjoy their experience and come back to the outdoors.

Hiking the Appalachian Trail from Old South Mountain Inn to Rocky Run Shelter offers a perfect mix of history, natural beauty, and peaceful forest paths. Starting near the historic inn in Maryland, the trail takes us through dense woodlands and gentle climbs with scenic overlooks along the way. The trek is about 5 miles and moderately challenging, making it ideal for backpackers looking for a short overnight. Arriving at Rocky Run Shelter, we will enjoy the updated facilities, including a newer shelter, before settling in for a relaxing evening surrounded by nature.
This trip is for beginner backpackers looking for a challenge and above.

Sugarloaf Mountain is a beautiful natural area located about 10 miles south of Frederick, Md. and is known for its scenic views, hiking trails, and unique rock formations.
The area is privately owned by Stronghold, Inc., a non-profit corporation, organization by the late Gordon Strong. It owns and operates the mountain property for the public's "enjoyment and education in an appreciation of natural beauty."
Because of its geological and natural history interest, it was designated as a National Natural Landmark in 1969. The mountain also has historical significance, having been used as an observation point during the American Civil War.
Please join me for a walk through the woods among the mountain laurel to the top of ridges that provide picturesque views of the surrounding piedmont area below. We’ll experience an elevation gain of 1,355 feet. Note, the trail is mostly rocky and can be slippery when leaf covered. We recommend sturdy shoes/boots and trekking poles.Gordon Strong believed that "...those who appreciate natural beauty will be better people, people who treat each other better."
