Mana Island daytrip ($70)
Details
We've got a fantastic opportunity to experience one of our region’s most special scientific reserves – Mana Island. It's been difficult to get onto Mana Island in the past - charters and one-off DOC events only - but now there are day trips available. Let's get in while we can!
What to expect?
The Mana Island experience is very similar to Kapiti Island but provides unique adventures and the opportunity to build meaningful connections with nature. It is smaller and not as bush-covered as Kāpiti but you’ll find grass tracks throughout, which offer a more intimate connection to nature, stunning views, rich history, and one of the country’s best environmental success stories.
Fern birds, large population of Takahe, king fisher, kakariki, robins, piwakawaka, covered in lizards, giant weta she is a wonderland of nature.
The walk to the summit is about 250 meters, far less strenuous than Kapiti’s hike. There’s also safe swimming and a grassy area perfect for picnics or group activities.
I'm in! How do I sign up?
RSVP 'yes' and drop money into my bank account - $70 per adult or $40 per child (16 and under):
12-3154-0060050-00
Use your meetup name and "Mana" in the references.
At some point I'll juggle non-payers onto the waitlist and pull you back to 'going' once you've paid so I can manage numbers.
I can't go now, how do I get a refund?
Alas since we've got to book the boat, we can't give refunds. However I'm pretty sure demand will exceed supply so you should be able to sell on your ticket to somebody else.
We will go ahead wind rain and shine, but if the trip is cancelled due to sea conditions or other reasons you'll get your money back.
How to get there and away
We depart from the Mana Marina, where there is plenty of free parking (put Pascoe Ave, Paremata into Google Maps), and it's about a 10-minute walk from the Mana train station. After a quick biosecurity and safety briefing, it’s a 20-minute boat ride to the island. (Start time to be confirmed, it'll probably be 8am or so).
What will we do?
Four to five hours is the perfect amount of time to spend on the island. The full walk around the island takes about two hours, including a break at the summit.
This is a self-guided tour (unlike Kapiti, which includes a guide), but we can follow a self-guided tour pamphlet.
How many can go?
20-35 people. The Go Mana boat can accommodate 35 people, Coops the organiser can give us that cheaper $70 price if we get 20 or more people together.
