Northern Walkway (to Thorndon Fair for lunch)
Details
It's the Thorndon Fair on Sunday 1 December so let's take a long walk there from Johnsonville, and then enjoy some lunch from one of the many food trucks/stalls as we wander around the fair.
***Note that entrance to the fair is by gold coin donation.***
One of the best walks around Wellington, the Northern Walkway is a beautiful, 13 kilometre hike from Johnsonville, up to Mt Kaukau, through several parks and suburbs via the Town Belt, finishing in Thorndon (near the Botanic Gardens).
The walkway has many attractions including spectacular views. It is steep in some places, mainly at the start up to Mt Kaukau, but not steeper than elsewhere in Welly ;-).
The walk ends near the Botanic Gardens in Thorndon, but then for those that are keen we can check out the Thorndon Fair and grab some lunch there.
Difficulty: you need a good level of fitness. This walk has a few steep parts and is quite long.
What to bring: sturdy shoes, water and snacks, waterproof and windproof clothing
Time: approx. 3.5hrs of walking (at a good pace)
The walk will start from Johnsonville station at 9:00am with the aim to be at the fair by around 12:30pm.
How to get there:
- Drive to Johnsonville railway station for the start of the walk, leave your car there, and catch the train back to Johnsonville at the end of the walk.
OR
- Catch the train to Johnsonville station. There is a train that leaves Wellington station at 8:32am and gets to Johnsonville at 8:55am.
OR
- Catch the Number 1 bus.
The walk ends near the Botanic Gardens in Thorndon.
