Welsh Mountain Walks

This event is all about learning how to climb safely at an indoor climbing wall. During the 3 hours you will learn how to warm up for climbing, how to boulder, how to tie in to a climbing harness and belay safely. If you have already done some climbing we will recap the essentials before we get bouldering and climbing.
Bouldering is climbing without the need for ropes on small walls with safety matting.
Climbing involves the use of a harness, ropes and balaying. Belaying is the term used to create friction on the rope by using a belay device, so that if a climber falls off, they do not fall very far.
By the end of the 3 hours you will be able to climb and belay safely whilst having had lots of fun.
The cost of the event is £48. This price includes entry to the wall, hire of a harness and shoes and 3 hours of instruction by an experienced fully insured Climbing Wall Instructor.

Hi everyone. You are invited to join me for a Moderate/Challenge day walk on Fan Fawr which is the mountain opposite Pen Y Fan. Even though it is only on the other side of the road, this mountain has the feeling of experiencing the Brecon Beacons without lots of people The walk involves 14kms in distance and 550 metres of ascent and is on variable terrain. You will be required to bring waterproofs, spare warm top, lunch, water, hat, gloves and a headtorch. If you have previously done a navigation course with me and would like a bit of coaching just let me know prior to the event.

Hi Everyone. The next Moderate/Challenge offer will run from February 2024 to April 2025. The dates are February 15th March 22nd and April 26th, for £85 This is a saving of £20 if you were to purchase the walks seperately. You dont have to do all the walks but the more you do the better the deal. The price per walk after the offer will be £35 per walk. The Moderate/ Challenging walks will be suitable for members who enjoy a full day walking, on varied terrain, be up to 16kms in length/distance and have about 600 metres of ascent. The walks will take place throughout the Brecon Beacons. The walks will be across the park with one each in the Central Beacons, on the wild Black Mountain in the west and the Black Mountains in the East. Please note no transport or accommodation is included. There are limited spaces for this offer, so respond early to book your place. Rsvp for £85 which guarantees your place. If you have done a navigation course with me before, I will be very happy to coach you in these essential skills on the walks, if that is what you would like.

Hi all,
This is a 2 part course that will see you cover essential mountain skills and the NNAS Silver navigation award. By the end of the 2 weekends you will have been coached in and have practised, all the essential skills to become an independent mountain walker.
The course is in 2 parts over 2 weekends. You have to attend both parts to cover the sessential skills and gain the NNAS Silver award. What will be covered?
The essential skill areas we will cover are:
Planning
What you need to consider when planning a mountain walk
Walking Skills
How to walk safely in the mountain environment, the equipment you need to carry and the skills needed to negotiate steep and loose terrain.
Clothing and Equipment
The clothing, footwear, and kit you need to consider using
Weather
The effect of weather in the mountains and on your route planning and how to obtain and understand a mountain forecast.
Navigation in the Mountains
You will use different maps and scales, understand map features and symbols, how to measure distance on maps and calculate walking time in mountainous terrain. You will also learn how to relocate use a compass and deal with pooor visibility.
Environmental Knowledge
We will look at the mountain environment and how we can walk through it in a sustainable way
Hazards and Emergency Procedures in the Mountains
You will learn how to Identify potential hazards in mountainous terrain, manage risk while mountain walking and how to call for help if needed
Introduction to the role of Mountain Rescue teams

What dates do you need to be available for to do this 2 part course?
Part 1 dates are March 8th and 9th in the Brecon Beacons
Part 2 dates are April 12th and 13th in the Brecon Beacons

The cost for the entire 2 part course is £285.

Kit wise, you will need to bring a pen and notebook, rucsac for your waterproofs, hat, gloves, spare warm top, headtorch, lunch, snacks and water. You will need a wrist watch that has a stopwatch facility on it. I suggest you purchase a Silva Expedition 4 compass for this course. I will provide maps.
