Hi all,
This is a 2 part course that will see you cover essential mountain skills and the NNAS Silver navigation award. By the end of the 2 weekends you will have been coached in and have practised, all the essential skills to become an independent mountain walker.
The course is in 2 parts over 2 weekends. You have to attend both parts to cover the sessential skills and gain the NNAS Silver award. What will be covered?
The essential skill areas we will cover are:
Planning
What you need to consider when planning a mountain walk
Walking Skills
How to walk safely in the mountain environment, the equipment you need to carry and the skills needed to negotiate steep and loose terrain.
Clothing and Equipment
The clothing, footwear, and kit you need to consider using
Weather
The effect of weather in the mountains and on your route planning and how to obtain and understand a mountain forecast.
Navigation in the Mountains
You will use different maps and scales, understand map features and symbols, how to measure distance on maps and calculate walking time in mountainous terrain. You will also learn how to relocate use a compass and deal with pooor visibility.
Environmental Knowledge
We will look at the mountain environment and how we can walk through it in a sustainable way
Hazards and Emergency Procedures in the Mountains
You will learn how to Identify potential hazards in mountainous terrain, manage risk while mountain walking and how to call for help if needed
Introduction to the role of Mountain Rescue teams

As you can see by covering the above essential skills and the NNAS Silver award you will aquire a very comprehensive set of essential skills.
What dates do you need to be available for to do this 2 part course?
Part 1 dates are March 8th and 9th in the Brecon Beacons
Part 2 dates are April 12th and 13th in the Brecon Beacons
The cost for the entire 2 part course is £285.

Part 1. Rsvp via Meet Up for £30. I will send you an Invoice for the balance less the NNAS fee which you pay on the NNAS site

If you have any questions just get in touch.
Kit wise, you will need to bring a pen and notebook, rucsac for your waterproofs, hat, gloves, spare warm top, headtorch, lunch, snacks and water. You will need a wrist watch that has a stopwatch facility on it. I suggest you purchase a Silva Expedition 4 compass for this course. I will provide maps.
