Join us as we enjoy Columbia Road flower market, a pub lunch, and the ‘Winter Past’ displays at the Museum of the Home (previously the Geffrye Museum).
A good opportunity for photography and chance to buy some flowers and plants.

A 10-minute walk from Hoxton station, Columbia Road flower market is open every Sunday from 8.00am to 2.00pm; traders begin setting up their stalls as early as 5.30am. Plants, bedding plants, shrubs, bulbs, and freshly cut flowers are all available at affordable prices. Many of the traders are selling at the market for the second or third generation of their families. Bread and cheeses, antiques, garden accessories, exotic international foods, soap, candlesticks, and other artefacts are also available in the market.

After spending time at the market, we’ll break for an early pub lunch before heading off to spend the rest of the afternoon at the Museum of the Home, about 10 minutes’ walk away. Set in 18th-century almshouses and surrounded by a sequence of period gardens, the museum is often described as an oasis in the heart of the city. The museum explores the ways people live. Its collections show how homes have been used and furnished over the past 400 years, reflecting changes in society and behaviour as well as style, fashion and taste. A series of period rooms lead visitors on a walk through time from 17th-century oak furniture and panelling, past muted Georgian elegance and eclectic Victorian style, to 20th-century modernity and contemporary living.

Each year, in the run-up to Christmas, the museum’s period rooms are transformed with authentic festive decorations, lighting, music and greenery to give visitors a magical glimpse into how Christmas has been celebrated in English middle-class homes. Step back through the centuries and discover the origins and meanings of some of the rich and vibrant traditions of Christmas past, from feasting, dancing and kissing under the mistletoe to playing parlour games, hanging up stockings, sending cards, decorating the tree and throwing cocktail parties. ‘Winter Past’ reveals how winter has changed London homes through the last 400 years, exploring what migration has brought to the city's homes – from decor to food, to keeping warm, entertained and being with those who matter to us. A perennial favourite, many visitors say that the ‘Winter Past’ displays have become an essential part of their own Yuletide traditions.

Entry to the museum and the ‘Winter Past’ displays is free. Your £2 Meetup fee will be collected from you on the day.
