Writing critique meeting
Details
Please read before attending:
We are currently meeting via Zoom. The zoom link will be posted in the comments of the event below!
One other note. If you are a complete newcomer we would like you to attend one meeting before submitting anything. We do this because it's not uncommon for people to submit for the first time and not show up, even after everyone has read the piece. So please come, read, and give feedback the first time you attend! And then you're all set to submit your stuff.
Moving on...
This is a writing critique group, so you can send in your writing via the hyperlinks (Dropbox) below, and you can view current submissions. Please read submissions before attending. The actual meeting is about giving critiques. You need not sign up for your own Dropbox account.
Our ultimate goal is to become better writers. All good writers read. Evaluating what you read teaches you to better judge your own writing.
The actual content of your critique is up to you, but we generally devote more time to things like plot, voice, setting, character development than line/copyediting. Some writers will request comments on specific things.
You are not required to submit your own writing, but since this is a critique group, we highly encourage it. If you submit, you are expected read the other submissions and come ready to critique them. By doing both, we can all progress in our craft. You may submit one piece per meeting, with a maximum limit of 3000 words. The best format is Word, double-spaced.
Submit by 5pm Thursday before the next meeting. All submissions should include a date. Older submissions are either deleted or moved to the “Old Submissions” folder.
Writing is hard, no matter how much or little experience you have. Whether you like or dislike a piece, please respect and support a writer's efforts. Ridicule is not constructive, while even a little encouragement can lead to significant improvement. We suggest you begin a critique with something positive. We are all about critiques that are frank, but fair.
*Please direct questions about guidelines to Victoria Ryan at [email protected]
