The recent data breach at Desjardins, thought to be one of the largest ever among Canadian financial institutions, impacted roughly 9.7 million people and businesses. This incident, combined with public demand for stricter data protection and rising fraud incidents, resulted in the passing of Law 25 in 2021. Additional provisions coming into effect September 2023.

How secure is your organization’s data? Law 25 obliges non-profit organizations and small businesses to comply with a range of norms and practices. This touches everything from how data is collected, to how it is stored and managed, to how stakeholders can request information about what kind of data is kept on them. This is a lot to put on the shoulders of already overwhelmed organizations, with no financial support accorded from the government.
