Religion, Spirit, and the Altar

(Apologies in advance for denying our democratically selected topic of Nihilism -- we thought it best to leave Nietzsche in January with the rest of our New Year's resolutions.)

Is religion inevitable? From the temples of ancient civilizations to the quiet rituals of today, faith and spirituality seem woven into the fabric of humanity. Are we drawn to altars and higher powers by nature, or can we transcend the need for them altogether?
