This hike goes through the meadows and wooded floodplain of the Bolin Creek Greenway. We follow an out-and-back route, starting from Chapel Hill’s Umstead Park to the Chapel Hill Community Center on Estes Drive. Our hikes often extend beyond the Community Center a mile or two on the Battle Branch Trail, for a total hike of about five to seven miles. We maintain about a 25 minute/mile pace, and participants should plan to set aside about two hours for the hike.

We walk in just about any weather, including light rain. Organizers keep a close eye on the forecast, but ordinarily a weather-related cancellation will not be announced until the morning of the event. Watch the event page if you have any weather concerns.

While the Bolin Creek trail is paved, the Battle Branch Trail is on natural surface and the footing can be rough and muddy in some areas. Hiking boots or trail shoes, a water bottle, and comfortable hiking clothes are recommended.

If you sign up for this walk, we do ask that if your plans change, you promptly change your Meetup RSVP to "Not Going." That way, the rest of us won't delay our hike awaiting your arrival.
