AMC Avalanche Beacon Workshop
Details
The annual refresher -
Mountaineers, Ice Climbers, Skiers, Split Boarders, Snow Boarders – if you are going alpine or backcountry then avalanche beacons are highly recommended, and in many cases required.
Come to the AMC workshop for an introduction and refresher to avalanche beacons. We’ll do live practice with live beacons on “dead” snow (the desert!).
There will be basic instruction and demonstration of beacon operations and functions, beacon search range, search patterns, and beacon audio/visual signals. Participants will work in pairs and teams for hands-on practice on beacon usage and search patterns for rescue (or. . . um, body recovery). There will be a demonstration on probing and shoveling techniques.
Bring water, snacks, and your imagination for a “winter” outing. If you have a beacon, please bring it.
Participation limited to verified active, dues-paying AMC members.
Workshop is 2:00pm - 4:00ish pm. Location is Phoenix Papago Park. Workshop is limited to 7, including instructor.
**Meet at Phoenix Papago Park, intersection of Galvin Parkway and Papago Park Rd. Find me at the trailhead ramada on west side of Galvin parkway (West Buttes parking lot). Limited parking at the trailhead or more parking across Galvin Parkway at the Hole-in-the-Rock parking area (don’t park in the Zoo lots). **
