Bird walk at Kakiat County Park

Details

Many of us are still reeling from recent events and need an outlet for our feelings. This bird walk is a way for us to forget our woes for a couple hours as we look for birds, have fun and hopefully relax for awhile.

Kakiat County Park is a really pretty, minimally landscaped park in the village of Montebello. Nestled against the southeastern side of Harriman State Park, Kakiat has a diverse topography, from flat wetlands to rolling hills, to steep mountainside.

It can also be quite birdy, depending on the day-which is pretty much the same for all spots! Migration has wound down, but there are always resident birds to enjoy!

The trails we will be taking are relatively flat (with a tiny incline in one or two places) but can be rocky so appropriate hiking shoes or boots are suggested. We will check out the fields as well as the blue and white trails, exploring at a nice slow pace.

Binoculars are encouraged, for optimum viewing, but if you just want to come along to explore the trails with us, that’s okay!

All levels are welcome, although beginners will be paid close attention to in order to boost your confidence and knowledge. NEVER be afraid to ask questions!

It can get very crowded and the birds are active earlier in the morning-I’ve found 8am to be a fairly productive time to start at this time of year. Remember, the early birder…gets the birds!!

We will do about two hours, but if folks want to go longer, I’m game!
Group Size limited to 15.
Restrooms are available.
Please be sure to register. We will meet by the bridge in the parking lot.

Let’s get together and allow nature to help us deal with our feelings!
