What we’re about
Boardgame Monkeys is a meetup group for BOARDGAMERS and ROLEPLAYERS in Brussels.
All of our events are conducted in English. We are open to players of all skill levels, so whether you are an experienced gamer or just interested in finding more about the hobby, come and join us. Please note that this group is for people interested in modern boardgames and generally does not cater to players of traditional games such as Chess, Go etc.
BGM hosts two kinds of events:
- Join and Play!/No Work All Play!: Anybody can come and join a large group of gamers for a game. These sessions take place on the first, second and third Wednesday of the month. Join the event and indicate in the comments what table you would like to join.
- Afterwork/Weekend Sessions: Individual game tables hosted by our event organisers any day of the week. Just join the event and you are good to go.
Once you are a member of the group, you are free to join either type of event. Please always RSVP before attending. Over time, you might become interested in hosting tables yourself. If that is the case, you might qualify for organizer status after a while.
If you have any questions about how anything in the group works, contact our Membership Manager, Gianluca. If you would like to a host table yourself, after having played a few times with us, please also get in touch with him and he can set up events for you.
Lastly, if you have any complaints or concern, get in touch with the BGM President, Oliver.
You can find many of us on Discord here: https://discord.gg/K37h2zZ
Please note the following rules:
- We have more than 20 Event Organizers who are hosting regular tables to share their passion. Respect their time, energy and explanations. Be on time for your session!
- We bring our personal games with us or borrow one from a games library. If you damage a game or component during a session, please note that you are expected to pay on the spot the store price or Kickstarter price of the full game and take the damaged game home.
- We play at the Outpost Brussels (our main sponsor) and we expect that you will order drink and/or food to support them and us in return. It is only fair as you will play for free with our group.
- No-shows are frowned upon and may lead to your removal from the group if no adequate reason is provided. Especially for Afterwork Sessions, one person not showing up might spoil the game for everybody!
- Late-cancellations (= cancelling less than 24 hours before the event) can also lead to removal from the group if it occurs repeatedly, as it will often be hard to find a replacement at short notice.
- Please switch on "Who can contact you on Meetup - Anyone on Meetup/Member of my groups only" so that table hosts can contact you when necessary. This can be done in Settings -> Privacy.
Happy Gaming!
Upcoming events (4+)
See all- Weekend Session: Virtù - The Art of GoverningRibaucourt metro station, Brussels
Virtù - The Art of Governing, is a resource-based strategy game in which we will govern one of the five famous city states in Renaissance Italy. The goal is to become the most prestigious ruler in the land, be it through setting up a mighty government, supporting the sciences and arts, conquests, religious influence etc.
One round (which represents a year), consists of 2 parts: a spring and winter phase. While the spring phase is all about deciding and executing your governing focus (domain management, diplomatic annexation, patronage, conspiracy or war), the winter phase is about preparing your spring focus by expanding and/or reorganizing your government and domains.
The options you have during each phase, depends on how you plan a number of resources available to you, including crown authority, religious reputation, intrigue influence and gold. Therefor, a lot of the game is about planning ahead, though the actions of other players may make you to reconsider your plans.
1 friend is already joining, so we will play by 3-4 player-rules. I've foreseen plenty of time for explaining, so newcomers are very welcome.

How to play: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9QgQbAolyd4&t=67s - Afterwork session: Raiders of the North Sea All-InOutpost Brussels Gamecenter, Bruxelles
Disclaimer: French copy of the game. As cards are drawn secretly, it's recommended to be able to read French; though, an English listing of all cards will be available to help, if necessary.
Raiders of the North Sea is set in the central years of the Viking Age. As Viking warriors, players seek to impress the Chieftain by raiding unsuspecting settlements. To do so, players need to assemble a crew, collect provisions, and journey north to plunder gold, iron and livestock. Glory can be found in battle, even at the hands of the Valkyrie, so gather your warriors because it's raiding season!
To impress the Chieftain, you need victory points (VPs), with those being acquired primarily by raiding settlements, taking plunder, and making offerings to the Chieftain. How you use your plunder is also vital to your success. Players take turns in clockwise order, and on a turn you place a worker and resolve its action, then pick up a different worker and resolve its action. Broadly speaking, those actions fall in one of two categories:- Work: Having a good crew and enough provisions are vital to successful raiding, so before making any raids, players need to do some work to prepare their crew and collect supplies. This is all done in the village at the bottom of the game board, with eight buildings offering various actions. You must first place your worker in an available building where no other worker is present, then pick up a different worker from a different building.
- Raid: Once players have hired enough crew and collected provisions, you may choose to raid on your turn. To raid a settlement — whether a harbor, outpost, monastery or fortress — you need to meet three requirements: Having a large enough crew, having enough provisions (along with gold for monasteries and fortresses, and having a worker of the right color. Raiding offers various ways of scoring, such as military strength, plunder, and Valkyries, which is how grey and white workers enter the game.
The game ends when only one fortress raid remains, all Valkyrie have been removed, or all offerings have been made, then players tally their scores.
We'll be playing with both expansions.
