Dutch Art in a Global Age: Masterpieces from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston
November 10, 2024 – February 9, 2025
Piano Pavilion
In the seventeenth century, Dutch merchants sailed across seas and oceans, joining trade networks that stretched from Asia to the Americas and Africa. This unprecedented movement of goods, ideas, and people gave rise to what many consider the first age of globalization and sparked an artistic boom in the Netherlands.
Dutch Art in a Global Age brings together paintings by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Gerrit Dou, Jacob van Ruisdael, Maria Schalcken, and other celebrated artists from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston’s renowned collection. These are joined by four Dutch paintings from the Kimbell’s permanent collection, along with prints, maps, and stunning decorative objects in silver, porcelain, and more, from the seventeenth and the first half of the eighteenth centuries. Exploring how Dutch dominance in international commerce transformed life in the Netherlands and created an extraordinary cultural flourishing, the exhibition also includes new scholarship that contextualizes seventeenth-century Dutch art within the complex histories of colonial expansion, wealth disparity, and the transatlantic slave trade during this period.

The Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas, hosts an art collection as well as traveling art exhibitions, educational programs and an extensive research library. Its initial artwork came from the private collection of Kay and Velma Kimbell, who also provided funds for a new building to house it.
The building was designed by architect Louis I. Kahn and is widely recognized as one of the most significant works of architecture of recent times. It is especially noted for the wash of silvery natural light across its vaulted gallery ceilings.Museum Links:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgC1ohpCLzMAncient Egypt was a civilization of ancient Northeast Africa. It was concentrated along the lower reaches of the Nile River, situated in the place that is now the country Egypt. Ancient Egyptian civilization followed prehistoric Egypt and coalesced around 3100 BC (according to conventional Egyptian chronology) with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under Menes (often identified with Narmer). The history of ancient Egypt unfolded as a series of stable kingdoms interspersed by periods of relative instability known as "Intermediate Periods". The various kingdoms fall into one of three categories: the Old Kingdom of the Early Bronze Age, the Middle Kingdom of the Middle Bronze Age, or the New Kingdom of the Late Bronze Age.
Ancient Egypt reached the pinnacle of its power during the New Kingdom, ruling much of Nubia and a sizable portion of the Levant. After this period, it entered an era of slow decline. During the course of its history, ancient Egypt was invaded or conquered by a number of foreign powers, including the Hyksos, the Nubians, the Assyrians, the Achaemenid Persians, and the Macedonians under Alexander the Great. The Greek Ptolemaic Kingdom, formed in the aftermath of Alexander's death, ruled until 30 BC, when, under Cleopatra, it fell to the Roman Empire and became a Roman province. Egypt remained under Roman control until the 640s AD, when it was conquered by the Rashidun Caliphate.Mesopotamia is a historical region of West Asia situated within the Tigris–Euphrates river system, in the northern part of the Fertile Crescent. Today, Mesopotamia is known as present-day Iraq. In the broader sense, the historical region of Mesopotamia also includes parts of present-day Iran, Turkey, Syria and Kuwait.
Mesopotamia is the site of the earliest developments of the Neolithic Revolution from around 10,000 BC. It has been identified as having "inspired some of the most important developments in human history, including the invention of the wheel, the planting of the first cereal crops, and the development of cursive script, mathematics, astronomy, and agriculture". It is recognised as the cradle of some of the world's earliest civilizations.***

Talk: Frida, Diego, and the Myths They Made
Although Frida Kahlo is one of the most recognized and documented artists of the 20th century, our understanding of her as a person remains fragmented—shrouded by the myth she so carefully constructed. As part of the DMA’s exhibition, Frida: Beyond the Myth, join Dr. Agustín Arteaga, The Eugene McDermott Director and Co-Curator of the exhibition, as he discusses the real Frida Kahlo, focusing on her intense and complex relationship with Diego Rivera and how it shaped her life and art. Discover how her bond with Rivera influenced her emotionally charged visual language, using symbols and artifice to communicate—yet sometimes obscure—the truth behind her experiences.
Before leading efforts at the Dallas Museum of Art, Dr. Arteaga was the Museo Nacional de Arte director in Mexico City, one of Mexico’s largest and most prominent cultural institutions. He also served as the director of art museums in Puerto Rico and Argentina. Throughout his career, he has organized more than 100 exhibitions, including México 1900-1950: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco, and the Avant-Garde at the Dallas Museum of Art in 2017. Dr. Arteaga became the Dallas Museum of Art’s Director in 2016, and since then, he has led the Museum in diversifying its exhibition and educational programs to reflect the diverse communities of Dallas, with the goal of creating a sense of welcome for all.

Frida: Beyond the Myth
August 17 to February 22, 2025
Explore the life of Frida Kahlo, one of the 20th century's most well-documented and enigmatic artists, and an architect of her own persona. Meet Frida as she saw herself . . .
This August, the DMA presents Frida: Beyond the Myth. Composed of 60 works across media—paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs—the exhibition will explore the life of one of the 20th century’s most well-documented artists, who continues to elude our understanding of her as an individual.
Taking a chronological approach, this exhibition will lift the veil of myth surrounding Kahlo by delving deeper into the defining moments of her life and how she embedded symbolic motifs in her self-portraits and still lifes to cryptically express her emotive reactions to major events. These works will be supplemented with photographs of Kahlo taken by the friends and fellow artists who knew her best, capturing the vulnerability and sensuality that still compel us today.Exhibition Link:
