Talk: Frida, Diego, and the Myths They Made
Although Frida Kahlo is one of the most recognized and documented artists of the 20th century, our understanding of her as a person remains fragmented—shrouded by the myth she so carefully constructed. As part of the DMA’s exhibition, Frida: Beyond the Myth, join Dr. Agustín Arteaga, The Eugene McDermott Director and Co-Curator of the exhibition, as he discusses the real Frida Kahlo, focusing on her intense and complex relationship with Diego Rivera and how it shaped her life and art. Discover how her bond with Rivera influenced her emotionally charged visual language, using symbols and artifice to communicate—yet sometimes obscure—the truth behind her experiences.
Before leading efforts at the Dallas Museum of Art, Dr. Arteaga was the Museo Nacional de Arte director in Mexico City, one of Mexico’s largest and most prominent cultural institutions. He also served as the director of art museums in Puerto Rico and Argentina. Throughout his career, he has organized more than 100 exhibitions, including México 1900-1950: Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, José Clemente Orozco, and the Avant-Garde at the Dallas Museum of Art in 2017. Dr. Arteaga became the Dallas Museum of Art’s Director in 2016, and since then, he has led the Museum in diversifying its exhibition and educational programs to reflect the diverse communities of Dallas, with the goal of creating a sense of welcome for all.

Frida: Beyond the Myth
August 17 to February 22, 2025
Explore the life of Frida Kahlo, one of the 20th century's most well-documented and enigmatic artists, and an architect of her own persona. Meet Frida as she saw herself . . .
This August, the DMA presents
Frida: Beyond the Myth.
Composed of 60 works across media—paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs—the exhibition
will explore the life of one of the 20th century’s most well-documented artists, who continues to elude our understanding of her as an individual.
Taking a chronological approach, this exhibition will lift the veil of myth surrounding Kahlo by delving deeper into the defining moments of her life and how she embedded symbolic motifs in her self-portraits and still lifes to cryptically express her emotive reactions to major events. These works will be supplemented with photographs of Kahlo taken by the friends and fellow artists who knew her best, capturing the vulnerability and sensuality that still compel us today.
