Hello and welcome to the Japanese Lacquer Painting Meetup group!
Our group is dedicated to exploring and sharing the beauty and artistry of traditional Japanese lacquer painting, also known as maki-e. This ancient technique involves using natural lacquer (urushi) as a paint medium. You can draw beautiful traditional japanese patterns or your original design on shiny black laquarware or glass.
Whether you are good at drwaing or just trying out, our group welcomes anyone with an interest in Japanese lacquer painting.

Maki-e workshop in Delft
Japanese lacquer, or urushi, is a natural sap that is harvested from the urushi tree. It has been used for centuries in Japan for its decorative and protective qualities of woodenwares.We draw traditional Japanese patterns(wagara) or your original design with Japanese lacquer in the workshop. We provide a glass cup, a glass picture frame or a black lacquerware as your canvas.

Maki-e is a traditional Japanese lacquer decoration technique. Techiniques are involved drawing pictures, patterns, and letters on the surface of lacquerware using lacquer, and then sprinkling and fixing metal powder, such as gold or silver, onto the surface.
In our workshop, you have the opportunity to create maki-e designs using traditional Japanese patterns (wagara) or your own original designs. Then your canvas can be a glass cup or a glass picture frame.
