Completely forgot about this one too!!
My standout 'new' band at this years Beat The Streets was Mollie Ralph with her new band The City Flowers. While I've seen Mollie several times before, this is such a big change in direction that's it's definitely a 'new' thing. I've also noticed that on this poster, it just said The City Flowers, so they may even have dropped her name from the band.
Stained Glass also played D2D, and contains most of the same members and includes Mollie herself. Didn't see them at D2D, but they also supported Alt Blk Era on their album launch.
The headline act is Detroit goth/deathgaze duo Vazum - Really like the sound of these too!! I just really hope due to the 'big' local supports it doesn't empty out a bit after they've done!

One of my standout bands at last year's Dot To Dot was Welsh band Adwaith who we saw upstairs at The Red Room. I'd heard good things about them, mainly from the Focus Wales events, and they really didn't disappoint!
They return to Nottingham to headline The Bodega and bring Leicester's The People Assembly and our own excellent Grain Mother!

Hailing from the Welsh town of Carmarthen, Adwaith grew up surrounded by a rich tradition of Welsh-language indie-rock, and a tight-knit scene of experimental, artistically-minded bands that frequented their beloved local venue The Parrot. Inspired by the lineage of boldly experimental bands that emerged out of Wales in the ‘80s - Datblygu, TraddodiadOfnus and Fflaps to name three groups spearheading new wave Welsh rock music at the time – Adwaith knew that they wanted to be similarly uncompromising in their own vision. When Hollie Singer, Gwenllian Anthony and Heledd Owen first went about founding their own band in 2015, they were also equally influenced by newer acts they’d seen playing at local indie venues and Welsh-Language music festivals, where they bore witness to another new wave of musicians wielding Welsh as an exciting musical instrument.
After signing to Carmarthen-based indie label Libertino, Adwaith released their debut single ‘Pwysau’ in 2016, and steadily built on these promising foundations as they delved into mangled, free-wheeling post-punk recalling just some of their heroes: CAN, The Breeders, and NEU! That same year, debut album ‘Melyn’ perfectly skewered the anxiety and unease of becoming an adult in a fraught political climate, in a region too often sidelined and ignored by Westminster. The record went on to win the prestigious Welsh Music Prize, and the likes of BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, KEXP, NPR and BBC Introducing’s Huw Stephens all threw their support behind the group along the way.
In 2022, meanwhile, the band released their widescreen follow-up ‘Bato Mato’ – inspired by illuminating train journey into the remote rural reaches of Siberia aboard the Trans-Siberian Express to play UU.Sound festival in Ulan-Ude. In a historic first, the band became the first act ever to win the Welsh Music Prize twice over, and now have three headline tours, two acclaimed Glastonbury sets and Manic Street Preachers and IDLES support slots under their belts.
Adwaith might be a band with clear roots set down in Wales – but looking towards the future, they’re now keenly focused on taking the language worldwide.
- Gróa (Iceland) @ JT Soar with Glitch Magnet & LefthouseJT Soar, Nottingham
This will be my second gig in a week with a high proportion (not all this time) of songs in non-English languages. This one is Icelandic punk/post-punk/slightly indie-ish trio Gróa. Never like making sort of obvious comparisons, but perhaps a less-pop Sugarcubes?
Anyway, they sound great, and have Glitch Magnet (Leicester) and Lefthouse supporting - Seen Glitch Magnet a couple of times at least, and looking forward to seeing a new band with Lefthouse.

Gróa (Iceland) | FacebookSonic Masala presents Gróa!
Since first bursting onto the global punk scene in 2018, Icelandic trio GRÓA have thrilled audiences across the world by fully embracing an unruly freedom. Made up of sisters Hrafnhildur Einars Maríudóttir (aka Hrabba) and Karólína Einars Maríudóttir (aka Karó) and their childhood friend Fríða Björg Pétursdóttir, the Reykjavík-bred band merge elements of post-punk and noise-rock and art-pop with absolute abandon, arriving at an explosive yet magnificently arranged sound unlike any other. As shown on their 2019 sophomore album Í Glimmerheimi and its 2021 follow-up What I like to do—both re-released via U.S.-based record label FOUND—GRÓA approach their output with equal parts DIY spirit, strong-minded vision, and wildly playful imagination (a quality that extends to Karó’s recent excursion into inventing and constructing her own instruments). But while their songs endlessly veer off into unexpected and sublimely jarring directions, all of GRÓA’s music reveals the deep sense of purpose behind their nonstop experimentation: a profound desire to shatter limitations, dismantle worn-out patterns and narrow ways of thinking, and uncover new possibilities for living without restraint in an all-too-rigid world.Support comes from Leicester’s noisy post punks Glitch Magnet. Tense yet fun - they were amazing supporting Screensaver last year and are just great people (we bonded at JT Soar Fest over how jaw dropping Ut were so that says it all!)
