Rowlett, Texas Photography Club Meetup

Do you like talking about Photography? Do you like hearing others talk about Photography? Are there burning questions you have about the world of Photography? Do you have philosophical opinions about subjects such as Artificial Intelligence? Anything Photography!!

If you answered Yes to any of the previous questions then this meeting is for you. It is designed for open discussion about any topic regarding photography. It can be your opinion about something, or a question. It can be theoretical or practical.

It is not a show and tell. There will be no presentations or instructional training. Just a lot of fun discussing Photography.

Come join us around the table and immerse yourself in photography discussions for a couple of hours.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! We are having our Christmas party on December 7th from 12-3 PM. Please bring an inexpensive photo related gift ($5 to $10) to be given out in the raffle we are having.

We have secured a private room at Ernesto's Mexican Restaurant so we can enjoy our meal without excessive noise and congestion in the background. Robin Washburn will be presenting so get ready for a fun filled afternoon.

For our December photo walk (weather permitting), we're going to visit the Ft. Worth Zoo since it's been quite a while since we've gone here. Our timing will be a bit different on this walk due to the zoo being overwhelmed by school field trips in the mornings. The children are transported out after lunch, so we will visit in the afternoon after they should be gone. The children weren't the issue last time, it was the heavy traffic and parking situation which caused problems for everyone.
If you want to carpool from Rowlett, please meet at the Rowlett DART Station parking lot near the corner of Martin and Industrial at 10:45 am. If you want to meet at our first stop for lunch, plan to arrive about 12:00 pm at Tommy's Hamburger Grill & Patio at 2455 Forest Park Blvd., Ft. Worth TX. They have a good variety of food choices and good reviews. If you want to meet us at the zoo, please plan to arrive about 1:30 pm at the Ft. Worth Zoo at 1989 Colonial Pkwy., Ft. Worth TX. The zoo entrance is just 1 mile down the street from Tommy's. We'll meet just inside the entrance after getting our tickets. Zoo admission is $20 for adults and $16 for seniors (65+). You can buy tickets online or at the gate, but I would suggest buying your ticket at the gate since weather is always a factor in the winter, and I'm not sure if online tickets are date specific. Parking is $5 per vehicle so you will save if you want to carpool with someone. The zoo closes at 4:00 pm so we will have 2.5 hours to shoot.
Take a long lens in order to get closeups of the animals and your regular lens if you want more versatility or wider shots. I actually got decent photos at the Stuttgart Zoo in Germany with my 24-105 since that's all I had, but a long lens is best.
We'll head back home when the zoo closes or whenever people get tired and ready to go!

On the second Thursday of each month, weather permitting, we get together to go on a photo walk at a location anywhere from 15 minutes to 2 hours from Rowlett. The start and end times will vary each month, depending on time of year and where we are going, so the 9:00 am - 4:00 pm time is just a placeholder for the event. All the details for each event will be posted in place of this general description.

Prior to each event, the kind of equipment you might need; the cost, if any, to get into our destination(s); and the restaurant name, address, and approximate time we will gather to eat will be posted. We always plan to share a meal together on these excursions if you want to join us.
For each event, we will meet at the designated time at the Rowlett DART Station parking lot in the area near Martin and Industrial for those who want to carpool or caravan. The expected arrival time at the destination will be posted for those who want to drive directly there and meet the others. We will occasionally actually take the DART train to a destination and, in that case, the arrival time per the DART schedule will be posted so those coming from another DART station can coordinate the train schedule to arrive near the same time.
Most of these destinations are outdoors, however, in the hot summer months, we try and find indoor destinations that are photography related or have good photo ops and things of interest to see.
As always, weather can be a factor in whether the event can actually take place. Very, very cold or rainy weather will cause the event to be cancelled or, if possible, rescheduled on another day.

Street: People, Places, and Things

On the second Saturday of each month we will meet at the Rowlett Dart Station and head to a local street destination to photograph people, places and things in the style of master street photographers such as Saul Leiter, Jay Maisel, Bruce Davidson, William Eggleston, etc. Materials and references will be provided on the street photographer in advance of the walks. For beginners, a shot list will be provided to assist in participating. On occasion we will bring a model with us.

Want to learn or practice some intentional camera movement (ICM) photography. Intentional camera movement photography is named that because you are intentionally doing two things: you are setting a long exposure and are moving the lens to ensure any light in the photograph moves across your frame.

This is a workshop model...i.e., you will receive assignments to carry out and practice.

We will focus on the following assignments:

Horizontal
Vertical
Zoom in
Zoom out

You will need a zoom lens for the last two assignments.

Once we go through the exercises, we will team up in groups of at least 2 that stay together and exercise the assignments in down town Garland.

Itinerary meet at the theatre at 7:00 pm

7:00-8:00 complete the 4 activities.
8:00-8:30 Drinks / snacks down town at the coffee shop or your preference
8:30-9:30 walk around Garland in groups of at least 2 practicing the shots.
9:30 Meet at theatre. End of Meetup.

After - share your images in the album: TBD.
