What we’re about
Inspired by the Silent Book Club phenomenon (https://silentbook.club), bring along your current read of choice, any genre and any format (whether physical books, e-books, or audiobooks). There is NO assigned reading and absolutely NO deadlines to finish a book!
We meet up in an easily accessible space in St Albans town centre, i.e. at a bookshop, cafe or the public library - hopefully even outdoors in the summer, weather permitting! Depending on our location, we order drinks and snacks, and discuss our planned reads for a few minutes. Then, it's time to immerse ourselves in 1+ hour of quiet, uninterrupted reading. At the end we can decide to share what we've been reading (or not) and socialise a little with our fellow bookworms!
The simple aim of this silent book club is not to have a didactic or structured agenda but to share our love of reading amongst friends in a chilled space together, as often as we can manage it.
Our inaugural session began on the last Sunday of September 2024 and it is my hope that we can gradually arrange reading sessions on different days of the week, using a variety of public spaces. If you would also like to co-organise sessions from time to time, I would love to hear from you!
NB: I also run a parallel stationery Meetup group that focuses on creative journalling with lots of chatting and socialising, but THIS group is intended to be entirely separate and SILENT (during reading times). There will not be any overlap of activities with that group - and of course you are warmly welcome to join both! I really look forward to meeting you all and reading together :)

SECURE YOUR PLACE NOW! Come and join me in my 1-year anniversary as Meetup organizer and meet other members over a delicious lunch!
I have decided to have the party at The Hub on Verulam, which is already familiar to our book club members. We can look forward to delicious food and wonderful service.
This is a paid event, where you will need to put down a non-refundable £10 deposit per person to me at the time of RSVP, but which will be taken off from your individual final bill. Rest assured that you only pay for what you order from the a la carte menu, and I will even be able to get everyone 10% off their own bill! Please note, drinks are ordered on the day and are not covered by tab.
There is a bit of organisation and planning required, so please only commit to attending if you can make it. I am also planning some little treats and light entertainment on the day!
Below is the link to the menu, and I will be collecting your pre-orders a few days before the event so that restaurant service runs smoothly on the day.

Meetup Celebration: Sunday Lunch
Time: from 12.30pm onwards
Venue: The Restaurant @ The Hub on Verulam, St Albans
Note: £10 deposit PP to be paid now to reserve your space (to be taken off your final bill), but is unfortunately non-refundable in the event of your no-show. Meal pre-orders will be collected closer to the time!
Sorry for all the notes and thank you for your patience and understanding!
Edit: I can see that Paypal / Meetup charges processing fees on both sides, which means you may pay slightly more than £10 at checkout and I also have slightly less than £10 to work with, but if you don't mind then it's all good! I will still honour the full £10 deposit PP as a goodwill gesture and to thank you all for your ongoing support :) Though I will also gladly accept any sympathy drinks on the day! :D
